Exploration
The thrill and value of exploration lies at the core of the NRZ philosophy. Through research, education and conservation we aim to spark the spirit of Exploration, that shapes peoples’ environmental identities and their sense of connection with nature.
We engage with exploration at every scale through:
extensive documentation of animal behavior
collaborating with researchers
collecting data at the zoo and in the field
delving into new questions on genetics, physiology and ecology
Research
As part of the zoo’s ongoing development and our commitment to the care and conservation of species and habitats, we support and encourage research on the species we maintain within the facility. This research is undertaken by Zoo staff, interns, volunteers and collaborators.
Research at NRZ is supervised by the Director, Research Officer & Animal collection Manager.
In addition to project specific research, the zoo maintains a continuous record of data on all resident species housed at the Zoo. This can be made available to other bonafide institutions and individuals on request.
Research programs at the zoo are prioritized towards studies that directly improve the welfare of species housed at the zoo or their populations in the wild.
We also support a range of anthropology, education and tourism research that explores the impact of zoos, analysis of outreach methods, science communication, etc.
When you visit, don’t miss our Curiosity Wall! We are proud to exhibit the outcomes of both big and small projects conducted at the zoo.
All research projects are subject to a rigorous Welfare Review Process in line with our Animal Welfare Statement Policy.
