Page Text: DONATE THE ALLURE OF AROIDS Dive into the captivating world of aroid plants—known for their striking foliage, vibrant colors, and ability to thrive in a wide range of habitats with diverse growing needs. WHAT IS AN AROID? Aroid is the common name for any plant in the Araceae family, also known as the arum family. Aroids are distinguished by a unique floral structure: countless tiny flowers are clustered on a fleshy spike known as a spadix, typically surrounded or enclosed by a modified leaf called a spathe. This striking combination called the inflorescence, often called a flower, is a hallmark of aroids. BIODIVERSITY POWERHOUSE Araceae is one of the most diverse plant families in the world. Its members are found across the Neotropics, Paleotropics, and parts of North America and the Mediterranean. With over 4,500 described species—and many more yet to be discovered—aroids thrive in a wide range of environments, from rainforest canopies to swamps and even your own windowsills. DIVERSE GROWTH FORMS The family includes a wide range of growth habits: some grow from the forest floor, others climb trees or cling to rocks, and some are even aquatic This adaptability makes aroids a fascinating group for both scientific study and horticultural enjoyment. EXPLORE POPULAR AROID GENERA Discover the diversity of aroids with these popular genera, celebrated for their unique characteristics and appeal. PAGES UNDER CONSTRUCTION Our team is currently in the process of verifying and updating all information on both the Genera and Species pages. These sections are still under construction—thank you for your patience as we work to ensure accuracy and completeness. Select a genus below to learn more and view its complete species list—or jump to the full index using the link below . Philodendron Extremely popular due to their incredible variety and stunning foliage. Popular species include Philodendron gloriosum, P. melanochrysum, and P. erubescens ‘Pink Princess’. Monstera Notable species include Monstera obliqua and Monstera esqueleto. Many are most recognized by their fenestrated leaves and unique variegation. Anthurium Includes both foliage types like Anthurium clarinervium and A. warocqueanum, as well as ornamental flower varieties like Anthurium andraeanum (flamingo flower). Alocasia Dramatic, arrow-shaped leaves make species like Alocasia amazonica ‘Polly’, Alocasia macrorrhizos (commonly known as Giant Taro), and Alocasia reginula ‘Black Velvet’ popular. Colocasia Known as elephant ear plants, these are popular in landscaping and container gardening, especially Colocasia esculenta. Syngonium The arrowhead plant (Syngonium podophyllum) is a popular trailing or climbing houseplant, available in various variegated and pink cultivars. Dieffenbachia This genus includes easy-care houseplants with large, variegated leaves. Spathiphyllum With their striking contrast of white flowers against rich green foliage, peace lilies are a timeless favorite. Amorphophallus Extremely popular due to their incredible variety and stunning foliage. Popular species include Philodendron gloriosum, P. melanochrysum, and P. erubescens ‘Pink Princess’. Registering a cultivar preserves its identity, ensures consistent naming, and aligns with the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) . Whether you’ve developed a unique hybrid or discovered a distinctive mutation, our step-by-step process will guide you through eligibility, naming, and formal publication. Explore cultivar guidelines, learn how to register your plant, or browse accepted entries in the Aroid Cultivars Registry—all in one place.
