I watched in awe from my home while this simple phrase from Untamed – WE CAN DO HARD THINGS – the mantra that saved my life twenty years ago, became a worldwide rally cry. Because we experienced the hardship of the pandemic collectively, many of us finally acknowledged what was true before COVID and will be true after: That life is freaking HARD. Two days after Christmas, 2011, Russ Faria came home from game night to find his wife, Betsy, dead. He was soon charged and convicted of her murder. But Russ Faria insisted he did not kill his wife. Betsy’s brutal murder set off a chain of events that would leave one man dead, another man implicated, and expose a diabolical scheme. It would also see Dateline NBC—the true-crime original—become a part of the never-ending saga that proves the old adage: Truth is stranger than fiction. This original series from Keith Morrison and Dateline defies all expectations.

When we face challenges in life, we seek answers from people we believe can help us. When tragedy strikes an exclusive retreat with a self-help superstar, many people are left to wonder: how far is too far? James Arthur Ray was an Oprah-endorsed self-help teacher who achieved fame, fortune, and influence. But friends and family members of his followers questioned his unorthodox methods, and tried to stop him. From Wondery, the makers of “Dirty John,” “Dr. Death,” and “The Shrink Next Door,” comes a story about the dark side of enlightenment.

We’re at our most vulnerable when we go to our doctors. We trust the person at the other end of that scalpel. We trust the hospital. We trust the system. Christopher Duntsch was a neurosurgeon who radiated confidence. He claimed he was the best in Dallas. If you had back pain, and had tried everything else, Dr. Duntsch could give you the spine surgery that would take your pain away. But soon his patients started to experience complications, and the system failed to protect them. Which begs the question: who - or what - is that system meant to protect?

We all have limits. And some people who are pushed beyond those limits will do unspeakable things. From Wondery, "Joe Exotic," is the story of a man who has devoted his life to raising and breeding lions, tigers, and other exotic animals at his Oklahoma zoo. He croons ballads, shoots guns, and puts it all on YouTube. But throughout his career, he’s made a lot of enemies. And the biggest of all is the owner of a big cat sanctuary in Florida named Carole Baskin.

Based on the iconic, Emmy-nominated series on A&E, this show explores some of the most difficult-to-solve murders, which stymied investigators and went cold, sometimes for decades. In fact, one-third of all murders in America remain open. But thanks to dogged investigators and breakthroughs in forensic technology, these cases become part of the rare 1% of cold cases that are ever solved. We love to talk about the federal government as much as anybody. But in a country of fifty unique states, some of the biggest, weirdest, sometimes brightest ideas happen in state governments. That’s why we’re going local. Civics 101: New Hampshire is a series exploring the government of our lovely, rambunctious home state. We get down to brass tacks with New Hampshire’s political insiders and try to decipher how local democracy actually works. www.civics101podcast.org/newhampshire/

As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey. Hoop and his associates uncover a nest of Xenomorphs, and hell takes on a new meaning. Quickly they discover that their only hope lies with the unlikeliest of saviors.... Ellen Ripley, the last human survivor of the salvage ship Nostromo.

Perhaps thanks to TV period dramas, the popular imagination may picture the Edwardian era as an idyllic window between the wars, a time of manners and tea on the lawn. But below the surface lies a frenetic and often bizarre age where scientific leaps forward went hand in hand with belief in fairies, and secrets of sex, lies and murder simmered. Across 12 episodes, in this sequel to his Victorian Secrets, Stephen Fry uncovers some of the startling and unexpected hidden histories of the Edwardians.

The idyllic quiet of a picture postcard English village is shattered when a book club member is murdered by his former student and lover. But why would anyone kill a retired English teacher, a pillar of his community? Perhaps the answer lies in the trail of writing that he, and his killer, left behind: diaries, poems and novels. Documentary maker Gillian Pachter lifts the lace curtain to reveal a secret wedding, sordid affairs, drug abuse and psychological torture. She enlists the help of James, a former student of the victim, to try and uncover the truth.

Stephen Fry travels into the most remarkable place we know - our brain. The organ of knowledge and the one we know least about. Over 12 episodes Stephen explores just how much we’ve learned about this mysterious structure in recent years and tries to answer some of the most difficult questions that remain. To do this, we relay the discoveries and stories of neuroscientists, psychologists, anthropologists and even philosophers, to add illumination and perspective as we travel. Each episode will be full of brainy stories: some shocking, some thrilling, some scarcely believable.

Piece together the mosaic of our minds
Like many people, I first learned about the work of neurologist Oliver Sacks from the movie Awakenings, starring Robin Williams and Robert De Niro. Based on his memoir about his drug experiments with catatonic patients in the 1960s, it inspired a multitude to want to learn more about the brain’s quirks, and Sacks became something of a star. I've long wanted to dig into his best-selling books, especially his 2015 memoir, but haven't until this new podcast made me realize all I've been missing. Radiant Minds host Indre Viskontas, a neuroscientist and opera singer, was also inspired to pursue this field by Sacks, and her work was even featured in his book Musicophilia. She's a trustworthy and empathetic host for this complex and fascinating journey “to tell the story of the human brain, one person at a time.” The way neurodiversity is handled—from case studies on Tourette syndrome to the complexities of memory and trauma—helped me appreciate the choices people have to make between treating their condition and potentially losing access to something fundamental to who they are. I found myself enthralled—just don't start self-diagnosing!

A Must Listen
Swipe right for...whoa
Is this a true crime podcast? I kept asking myself that as I came to write this review. And the answer is in the title itself: maybe? Each episode of Gabi Conti’s new show introduces you to a young person―mostly, but not all, women―with a shocking story to tell about a toxic date or relationship that nearly went very, very wrong. As the author of Twenty Guys You Date in Your Twenties , and a journalist who also challenged herself to go on 30 dates in one weekend, Conti is uniquely qualified for the subject matter. Even so she brings in an expert in matters legal, traumatic, or psychological to lend an added layer of authority to each episode. This show took me back to my 20s, when every outing with a new potential partner felt exhilarating, fraught, thrilling, and risky. For anyone who has been young and actively dating, it will summon a lot of truths and memories, and for those still in the game, it aims to gives listeners the tools and language to ward off toxic relationships before they get too deep. So is it true crime? Sometimes, but it was also nostalgic, timely, and fascinating, and I could not stop listening.
