Shaw Rocket Fund lnGenius Jr. Programming for Families
With generous support from Shaw Rocket Fund, the OIAF was once again able to offer InGenius Jr. programming at OIAF 2021. Families and teachers could register for free access to online screenings and learning activities for children interested in animation. Each Short Film Competition program featured a unique collection of films pulled from 2528 entries received from countries around the globe. The presentations offered up a chance to see films that offer different perspectives and kid-friendly stories that the whole family will enjoy.
InGenius Jr. Programming happens every year at the Festival – join us in-person in September 2022!
In the meantime, OIAF is happy to offer the following free resources year-round for families and teachers to help young audiences experience animated films, workshops, and behind the scenes features.
Elementary School Teachers
Access our virtual field trip package which includes a look behind the scenes at PAW Patrol courtesy of Spin Master Entertainment, learn about Indigenous storytelling traditions through animation and try some tutorials to make your own animation.

Mini-Lesson for The Mountain of SGaana
OIAF invites your class to use this resource provided by the National Film Board to learn about Indigenous people and storytelling traditions. The Mountain of SGaana is a visually stunning short film. Haida director Christopher Auchter blends traditional animation with Haida art forms to tell the story of a young woman who dives into the spirit world to rescue a young man.
NFB Education is an excellent resource for students interested in animation.
Learn to Animate Workshop with Sonya Carey
This workshop for young audiences, presented by The Animation Lounge, provides a basic entry into making your own animated films. Sonya Carey has 25 years of experience and a strong technical background as a 2D compositor, combined with several roles as producer and manager. She runs The Animation Lounge, which offers workshops focused on 2D animation and filmmaking. Follow along as Sonya opens the door on learning how to animate!

OIAF Animation for Young Audiences Playlist
Enjoy a selection of past Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) picks for the entire family, presented by Shaw Rocket Fund! The films in this showcase were all screened in competition as part of the “Animation for Young Audiences” programs between 2016 – 2019. The Ottawa International Animation Festival is an Oscar-qualifying film festival, running every September in Canada’s Capital since 1976.
Animation at Home with Tina Le Moine

Learn how to animate with every scrap of material you find around you. Grab whatever you want to see coming alive – your kitchen sponge, your favourite sock, your brother’s cute cuddly teddy bear and get ready to make them the stars in your own animated film. Tina Le Moine will guide you through an easy animation lesson using a phone, iPad or other recording device.

The OIAF partnered with Jam Filled Entertainment to offer the free Jam Filled Toon Apprentice Program to high school teachers and free Toon Apprentice Pass for students for OIAF21.

OIAF partnered with Jam Filled Entertainment to offer the free Jam Filled Toon Apprentice Program to high school teachers and free Toon Apprentice Pass for students to attend OIAF21. They have also created this valuable resource outlining the various roles and jobs available in an animation studio.
