Of course, that was in the past, but what about today? Well, today Sheffield is young again, having undergone and continuing to live through renovation. Its cultural significance also survives, especially as the home of the world's oldest football club. this, naturally, means that people around here know how to eat well.

Sandwiches are probably the simplest kind of food that can be popular in first world countries. Maybe this is the reason that the distinguished citizens and guests of Sheffield consume meat sandwiches themselves and offer them in restaurants. In this part of the world, the meat in the sandwich can be very different - from pork to veal to something more exotic like prosciutto or jamon. Additional ingredients may include herbs, cucumbers, tomatoes, and something to the client's personal taste.

Onions are not the obvious choice for an appetizer, but onion strings are a different matter. The dish is very simple. Thinly sliced sweet onions are soaked in buttermilk, dredged in a spiced flour mixture, and deep-fried. The result is rather basic but very nutritious and rather stong on the tongue. It goes well with drinks, so trying onion strings is recommended at a pub or a bar. However, some restaurants offer strings of better quality, but that is just a general rule. Onion strings with meat is the best combination.

Meat pies , in particular, have always been associated with the old times and the most accessible type of food that's hefty enough to feed the city folk as well as the men of the countryside. There are even urban legends and works of art related to pies, like the story of Sweeney Todd that was actually based on actual events and involved a particular filling for the meat pies. Nevertheless, potato-based dishes are very common, the most ruggedly attractive being, of course, a regular set of baked potatoes. Mind you, not any potato that is baked is called a "baked potato". However, shepherd's pie is not just some meat cooked with mashed potatoes as a topping. Red meat is generally used along with onions, gravy or sauce.
