Page Text: by Project Censored January 29, 2022 Project Censored encourages undergraduate students with strong interests in independent journalism and critical media literacy to apply for a summer internship. Summer interns will be engaged in the Project’s daily work, which includes identifying and vetting independent news stories, researching current news topics and issues in press freedom, communicating with partner organizations, and promoting the Project’s work through its website, social media channels, and public events. Reflecting the Project’s longstanding commitment to direct student engagement in critical media literacy, past interns have conducted research leading to publication bylines in the Project’s yearbook, State of the Free Press; its online “Censored Notebook”; and journals such as the Index on Censorship. Summer interns may also help with production of audio segments for the Project’s weekly syndicated radio program, The Project Censored Show. We strongly encourage students of color, students from working-class backgrounds, women, LGBTQ+ people, and students from other traditionally-marginalized communities to apply. INTERNSHIP DETAILS Summer internships typically run for a 3-month period, beginning in late May or early June. Start and end dates are flexible. Interns are expected to work several days per week, averaging 10-15 hours per week. The Project provides interns with a $1,000/month stipend. The summer internship is designed for interns to work remotely. No previous experience in journalism is necessary, but strong writing skills and careful attention to detail are a must. INTERNSHIP SKILLS Summer interns will develop skills that prepare them for a career in journalism, but which are also fundamental to successful employment in a variety of fields. These skills include research, fact-checking, editing and proofreading, online posting, outreach, and teamwork. HOW TO APPLY Applicants with active interests in independent journalism and critical media literacy and sharp attention to detail are encouraged to apply. The application consists of three items: a cover letter, describing your motivation, relevant experience, and any specific areas of interest; a résumé; and one writing sample. Please combine all materials in a single PDF and send submissions by  email to [email protected] , using the subject line SUMMER INTERNSHIP APPLICATION. The application deadline for Summer 2022 is Monday, March 28. We will conduct interviews with applicants in late April or early May. Share
