Literacy in Australia
Being literate is essential for learning and for children to make sense of their world. Reading is vital for the development of vocabulary and communication skills, to broaden knowledge and understand other cultures. Reading stimulates the imagination and creativity and offers whole new worlds to explore. Being literate is critical to participate fully in society and find employment. Unfortunately, literacy levels in Australia remain of concern, particularly amongst our most vulnerable students.
Access to good books remains a challenge for many children. The combined pressures of a lack of resources at school, no local library, poorly stocked libraries and financial pressures at home, mean that too often good books are not available. Providing brand new books to children who would otherwise miss out, is an important first step in improving literacy outcomes.
The links between access to good books and educational outcomes are well documented. Further research has also identified a link between access to books and a range of other important outcomes including an improved sense of wellbeing, resilience and good health.
We believe all children should have access to good books, regardless of their background. We work in many different locations around Australia and provide brand new books so that more children can read, more often.
“44% of Australians have literacy skills below level 3 – this means nearly half the adult population can’t read a book for pleasure and will find employment is hard for them…” AIG Tackling Foundation Skills in the Workforce report 2016.
