In the late 1850s, a Hungarian immigrant named Agoston Haraszthy came to the Sonoma Valley. Haraszthy looked to the study of grapes and the growing of grapes. He realized the soil in Sonoma would provide ideal conditions to grow grapes. Obsidian arrowheads, mortar beds and grinding stones have been found in and around the vineyard. Making it clear the land had once been inhabited by Native Americans. According to legend, the daughter of a local Indian chief wanted to marry a boy from a neighboring tribe but her father refused to allow it. In despair, the daughter leapt off a cliff to her death. This cliff sits at the heart of the vineyard property. After hearing this story, the owners, Lisa and Andy Paul, decided to name the winery Indian Leap. To purchase Indian Leap wines, click here .
