Israeli writer Alon Hilu on his stunning debut:
Death of a Monk
Alon Hilu, a young and acclaimed Israeli novelist, offers in his first novel, Death of a Monk an original homosexual interpretation for the historical blood libel against the Jews in Damascus, Syria, 1840. The Damascus of Death of a Monk is a rich and vibrant place; lively, sensual and at the same time teeming with fear and hostility. Through the dark alleyways and bustling marketplaces, Hilu unfolds a story charged with emotional and sexual conflict told by a young gay Jewish man. It is a powerful story, at times wickedly funny, at others painfully sad, but beautifully told throughout. The novel, awarded the 2006 Israeli Presidential Prize for Literature, has been translated into English, (Harvill Secker, London; Random House, Canada), and is being translated into French, Italian and Greek.
