Level/Salary Range: $60,000 with federal holidays and additional 16 days of scheduled paid
vacation/ sick leave
The Southwest Seattle Historical Society’s (SWSHS) mission is to preserve and promote local history
through education, preservation, and advocacy. Per our mission, and because we are committed to
welcoming and affirming a diverse community, it is a priority for SWSHS to incorporate Diversity,
Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) into every area of our operations, exhibits and
programming, and collections practices.
The Executive Director is responsible for consistent achievement of the mission of the Southwest
Seattle Historical Society (SWSHS) through outreach, engagement, and exhibits at the Log House
Museum and around the Duwamish Peninsula, with the aim to bridge and inspire meaningful community
connections to the past, present and future. The Executive Director is responsible for the
day-to-day management of the SWSHS, focusing on its fundraising, administration, and financial
management.
The Executive Director is a full-time exempt position; flexibility desired in order to work from
home, on site and within the community, performing evening and weekend duties as needed.
o Fulfill all tasks delegated in the bylaws to the Executive Director
o Engage with the Board and Staff on the administrative needs of the SWSHS in accordance with its
mission, and assist in the development of long range and strategic plans
o Act within nonprofit, history, historic preservation, and museum codes of ethics
o Pursue best practices in history, museum, and nonprofit management according to standards
determined by the Board
o Lead Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Inclusion Committee and its initiatives
Tasks
o Responsible for developing and maintaining sustainable revenue streams through cultivating major
gifts, grant writing and management/reporting, event coordination, and membership development
o Act as liaison with other local historical societies, key local government bodies and relevant
organizations
o Enhance the visibility of SWSHS via fundraising programs, projects, and events
o Promote SWSHS via internal and external tools and media
o Responsible for volunteer recruitment and retention with support from Volunteer Coordinator and
Staff
o Oversee and delegate marketing and communications materials
Administration and Financial Management
o Responsible for developing and managing budget and achieving financial goals as outlined in the
budget passed by the Board of Trustees
o Advise Board on developing formalized administrative and personnel policies and procedures
o Directly supervise staff and contractors
o Lead strategic and long-range planning
Operations
o Support staff to assure safe, efficient and inclusive museum operations
o Oversee the development and facilitation of security policies
o Oversee facilities maintenance and capital projects per facilities plan, with support from the
Curator and Facilities Committee
o Academic degree or equivalent work experience in nonprofit management, fundraising,
communications, or other area consistent with Job Description
o Experience working with historical societies and museums
o Staff management and administrative experience
o Experience fundraising, including major gifts, grants, membership programs, and events
o Experience in collaborating with diverse groups of colleagues and the public
o Knowledge of nonprofit best practices and relevant state and federal law
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
o Experience working with volunteers
o Experience with CRM and accounting software
o Familiarity with the AASLH Standards of Excellence Program curriculum
o Excellent problem solving and communication skills
o Experience in written and visual documentation
o Marketing and social media experience
