Our board of trustees
We are very proud that our trustees bring a wealth of experience and expertise to Sustrans and are grateful for their support and leadership.
Lynne Berry CBE (Chair)
Lynne Berry is Chair of the Human Tissue Authority as well as of Sustrans. She is also a trustee of Welsh National Opera.
Until recently she was Chair of Breast Cancer Now. And she was Deputy-Chair of the Canal & River Trust and Chair of Glandŵr Cymru.
She has had several Chief Executive posts. These include RVS and the Charity Commission.And the General Social Care Council, the Equal Opportunities Commission and the Family Welfare Association.
And she's had many trustee and Non-Executive roles. She has been a member of several government better regulation initiatives and was on the Advisory Board for Civil Society in the Cabinet Office.
Lynne is a Visiting Professor in Leadership at Cass Business School, City, University of London. She's a Fellow Commoner of Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge and an Honorary Fellow of Cardiff University.
Horace Carter-Allen
Horace is a senior civil service leader and has held a number of senior roles in the Criminal Justice Sector; he is currently on secondment to a Senior Programme/Project Manager role at the Ministry of Justice.
Horace is passionate about diversity and inclusion in wider society and the workplace and the role that this can play in the promotion of healthier and happier initiatives.
A black belt in Judo and a qualified coach, Horace spent 8 years coaching children. He is also an Arsenal supporter and regularly attends home games to watch his beloved team.
Moray Macdonald
Moray has over twenty-five years' experience and an award-winning record of innovation and delivery in public affairs and public relations, including as a senior political adviser in Scotland and New Zealand.
He is Group Head of Public Policy at international business communications consultancy Instinctif Partners.
He previously worked at Weber Shandwick, where as Managing Director he led the agency’s content production studios across the UK and Europe.
And for eight years he was Managing Director of the firm’s three offices in Scotland.
In 2019 Moray completed two terms as Chair of the Board of Trustees for Scouts Scotland.
He is a regular panellist on the ‘Shereen Show’ on BBC Radio Scotland and on BBC Scotland’s ‘Seven Days’ news review programme.
Catherine Max
Catherine provides independent strategy, policy and research consultancy to help organisations improve wellbeing and reduce health inequalities through social and environmental sustainability and urban design.
Previously an NHS non-executive director and trustee of health, social care, environmental and arts charities, Catherine is currently a member of the Research and Policy Committee.
A passionate Londoner, Catherine enjoys walking around the streets and green spaces of her home city at every opportunity.
Stuart Mills
Stuart is Chief Investment Officer at Canal & River Trust.
A chartered surveyor, Stuart joined Canal & River Trust in 1990 after working in private sector property consulting. He is a keen sports fan and has undertaken a number of long-distance cycle rides for charity and always enjoys the opportunity to walk around the cities he visits for his day job.
Heather Preen
Heather is a communications and engagement professional, with a special interest in building relationships with local communities.
Heather worked at a very senior level as a national newspaper journalist, before moving to Thailand with her family where she became the Director of Communications and Marketing at a major international school. She joined Transport for London in 2015.
Heather lives in London. She has a dog, a pair of walking boots and doesn’t own a car.
Helen Simpson
Helen is a dispute resolution specialist. After a law degree at Oxford University, Helen trained and qualified at Linklaters before moving to Dentons, where her roles included Partner, UKMEA Board member and leading the firm’s Disputes Division in the UK.
She is a CEDR qualified mediator and advises a range of organisations on investigations and crisis or risk management issues.
Helen is a former school Chair of Governors with experience of organising local community sustainable travel initiatives.
She has lost track of her family’s collection of bikes and muddy boots.
Frank Swinton
Frank is a hospital consultant in anaesthetics and intensive care. He is also the regional lead for climate change within health and social care in West Yorkshire and Harrogate.
Since working for the British Antarctic Survey for two years, he has been trying to reduce the impacts of his home and work.
He sits on the environment committee of the Association of Anaesthetists, has an MSc in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability and is a (very) amateur beekeeper.
Fiona Westwood
Fiona is a chartered accountant and partner at MHA Monahans. Prior to this, she headed the national charities technical team at PwC before gaining more experience at a 'Top 10' firm. She has a wealth of experience in the charity and not-for-profit sector which she brings to Sustrans.
She is Chair of the local Governing Body at Barton Hill Academy and is a member of the Finance Committee of the Venturers Trust.
Fiona is a dedicated walker and cyclist, often found with her family on her local bit of the National Cycle Network, the Strawberry Line.
