Either for academic credit (i.e. as part of a course), OR published or broadcast via a student-run news outlet. Each entrant may enter only one entry per category (although they may enter different entries in several or all categories) A specific work may be entered in only one category. Entries may be submitted by: The individual who created the work A member of a team which created the work A faculty or staff member who supervised the individual or team producing the work Entries will be deemed ineligible if they: Are academic works such as essays or research papers. Were produced for or under the supervision of a third-party professional (e.g. editor or producer who was not an instructor at the time). categories Photojournalism Good photojournalists communicate a narrative in an instant and can provoke profound emotion while maintaining objectivity. Your submission must have been produced for a class, or published in a student or campus newspaper or news site (but not in a professional publication, even if taken as part of an internship or placement). You may submit a single image, or a series of up to five of the same event. Judges will evaluate submissions considering composition, originality and technical skill. Photojournalism Commercial/Creative Photography Created to provoke an emotional response, demonstrate creativity and originality, offer a unique perspective and/or showcase a product, service or message in an instantly compelling way, submissions in this category will also display technical and compositional skill. Your submission must have been produced for a class, or published in a student or campus newspaper or news site (but not in a professional publication, even if taken as part of an internship or placement). You may submit a single image, or a series of up to five. Commercial / Creative Photography Audio Storytelling We learn to speak before we read; perhaps that's why audio storytelling – whether radio feature, news story, podcast or digital broadcast – packs such an immediate and emotional punch. Submissions to this category will be evaluated according to adherence to professional standards, how they incorporate sound and interviews, creativity and listener appeal. Audio Storytelling Written Word: News Story Submissions to the News Story category may have been produced for a class or published in a student or campus newspaper or news site (but not in a professional publication, even if completed as part of an internship or placement). Your submission should showcase your news judgement as well as research, interviewing and writing skills. It will be structured according to the principles of good newswriting, follow CP style and demonstrate an understanding of reader appeal. Written Word: News Story Written Word: Feature Story Submissions to the Feature category may have been produced for a class or published in a student or campus newspaper or news site (but not in a professional publication, even if completed as part of an internship or placement). Your submission should be creative and compelling, structured to engage the reader from beginning to end, and showcase your research, interviewing and writing skills. Written Word: Feature Story Written Word: Editorial or Column While a great editorial or column takes a stance and argues an opinion clearly and convincingly, its service to readers extends beyond that: to analyzing the impact of events, interpreting facts relative to an audience's interests and, often, advocating for action. Submissions to this category will be evaluated according to the effectiveness of the argument, appropriate reference to relevant facts and/or data, originality of thought and writing skill. Written Word: Editorial or Column Video Documentary The Video Documentary category welcomes submissions of longer than five minutes in length, produced for a class or campus outlet. Judges will evaluate submissions according to narrative/storytelling techniques and structures, creativity and originality, skilled use of sound, interviews, video and voiceovers, technical proficiency and viewer engagement. Video Documentary Video Short Form Submissions to the Video Short category are five minutes or less in length and may be news stories, features, promotional/commercial works or short documentaries produced for a class or campus outlet. Judges will evaluate submissions according to narrative/storytelling techniques and structures, creativity and originality, skilled use of sound, interviews, video and voiceovers, technical proficiency and viewer engagement. Video Short Form (5 mins or less) Public Relations or Marketing Campaign Your submission may be a public relations or marketing campaign or integrated communications plan. Be sure to include a description of your client, the objectives of the campaign/plan, strategies, tools and a measurement plan. Your entry will be judged on creativity and reader/client appeal, as well as the quality of research and background and adherence to professional standards and style. Public Relations or Marketing Campaign Multimedia Production An eligible multimedia submission tells a compelling narrative in an engaging package using at least two, ideally more, different media. Submissions will be evaluated according to the appropriateness of each medium used as well as how they complement each other, overall structure and composition and research, writing and technical skill. Multimedia Production Website For this category, the EMAs is looking for news and information websites such as online magazines, campus publications, student news sites and public-information portals created for public relations or marketing initiatives. Websites will be judged according to creativity, content, navigability and user appeal and engagement. In your submission, include a Word document into which you have pasted the url for your site. Website Design: Words + Pictures Whether a magazine cover, front page, spread, feature story or advertisement, your submission incorporates text and images in an engaging package guaranteed to hook readers.
