Strengthen Innovation
The Department of Defense is working with the Australian Embassy to further strengthen innovation and technology cooperation. Yesterday, USD(R&E) Heidi Shyu met with Ambassador Arthur Sinodinos to continue celebrating ANZUS’s 70th Anniversary and the strong defense S&T relationship between the United States and Australia
Collaboration
Under Secretary Shyu: “I aim to ensure the DoD collaborates more closely with the commercial and defense industries, and the DoD ecosystem of universities, Govt labs, federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs), and university affiliated research centers (UARCs).”
Solving Tough Problems

Department of Defense. Last week, she met with DARPA Director Dr. Stephanie Tompkins. “As a Nation, we can solve incredibly tough problems by working collaboratively towards a common cause.”

Under Secretary Shyu: “The challenges facing the U.S. military are both diverse and complex, including sophisticated cyberattacks, supply chain risks, hypersonic missiles, and bio-threats. We must harness our Nation’s incredible innovation to stay ahead of our adversaries.”

Space Development Agency Makes Awards for 126 Satellites to Build Tranche 1 Transport Layer
The Space Development Agency (SDA) today announced the awards of three prototype agreements worth approximately $1.8 billion to establish the foundation for Tranche 1 Transport Layer (T1TL), a mesh network of 126 optically-interconnected space vehicles (SV) that will provide a resilient, low-latency, high-volume data transport communication system, and be ready for launch starting in September 2024.
The OUSD(R&E) Deputy Director for Engineering Released Guidebooks
The Engineering of Defense Systems Guidebook and Systems Engineering Guidebook replace Chapter 3, Systems Engineering, of the Defense Acquisition Guidebook. The Engineering of Defense Systems Guidebook describes the activities, processes, and practices involved in the development of DoD systems. The guidebook aligns with the engineering disciplines covered in DoD Instruction 5000.88, Engineering of Defense Systems, and focuses on recommended engineering best practices for the DoD Adaptive Acquisition Framework acquisition pathways.
