Program and Administrative Contractor
The Institute for Research on Male Supremacism is seeking a remote part-time contractor to support our operations researching and challenging male supremacism. The 40-hour per month, 5-month position (with the possibility for an extension) will support a variety of tasks around administration, finance, fundraising, communications, and program development. We are looking for someone who has prior experience in at least some of these areas and who is a capable and eager learner, able to absorb new information and develop skills in this position. In other words, we welcome applications from candidates who might not have all the suggested qualifications looking for a growth experience, especially candidates from historically and systematically marginalized groups. The Program and Administrative Contractor will primarily report to the Executive Director, and will also work with the Board Treasurer and Chair. Thanks to grant support, the role is currently funded at $1200 per month for five months, with the option to extend if our fundraising permits. The position title and scope of responsibilities is negotiable based on the candidate’s experience.
Male supremacist ideology is the belief in cisgender men’s superiority and right to dominate, control, or erase “others”: cis and trans women, trans men, and non-binary people. IRMS supports a community of researchers committed to exposing and challenging common narratives that uphold male supremacist ideology. Our research draws on intersectionality and reproductive justice frameworks in emphasizing the intersections of misogyny and transmisogyny with other axes of oppression, such as racism, xenophobia, antisemitism, and heterosexism. Our fellows’ and mentees’ work spans a range of topics, from misogynist incel ideology and mass violence; to rape culture, Title IX, and men’s rights activists; to racist misogyny and violence toward Black women and Asian women. We emphasize structural change, shifting discourse toward investing in longer-term solutions such as comprehensive consent-based sexuality education and organizing at the local and state levels.
The Contractor will support our core initiatives, which include:
major events such as the Training Institute on Anti-Supremacist Organizing and a new Conference on Supremacism Studies (virtual and/or in-person, based on Covid risk);
planning workshops to aid writing for either academic or public audiences;
working groups on various topics such as designing curricula and reading primary sources (i.e. manifestos and writings by male supremacist perpetrators);
webinars that present on research or bring together experts for topical panels on current events in male supremacism;
support for organizers such as designing resources and materials;
shaping media discourse and narratives;
community-building, networking, and social events through virtual happy hours and other initiatives;
institute-sponsored publications (for example, the policy brief on misogynist incel violence copublished with New America or the forthcoming Routledge volume on Male Supremacism in the United States).
In 2022, specific IRMS projects in the works may include events and research around supporting comprehensive sexuality education, expanding work on anti-trans ideology and biological essentialism, a publication on anti-sex work ideology, developing resources for media on covering supremacism, countering mainstreaming and legitimation of supremacists, and other topics as they arise.
The Contractor is expected to have primary responsibility for coordinating the fellows and mentee program logistics, overseeing a website redesign, media outreach, updating the website and social media, sending eblasts, running crowdfunding campaigns, and organizing and promoting webinars. The Contractor will support grant proposals, major event organizing, fellow and mentee orientation, intern supervision, and other projects under the direction of the Executive Director. The Contractor will also work with the Board Treasurer and Chair to make sure IRMS is in administrative and financial compliance as a 501c3 incorporated in the United States.
Preferred qualifications include: writing, editing, and communications experience; fundraising experience; graphic design; attention to detail; financial and/or administrative experience; familiarity with WordPress, Mailchimp, social media platforms, and Patreon. Required qualifications are a passion for challenging misogyny and transmisogyny, commitment to principles of social justice and intersectionality; and enthusiasm for developing new skills and taking on more responsibility. IRMS operates internationally and we will consider applications from English-speaking candidates in any country, though the Contractor would need to be regularly available during U.S. working hours given that our board and executive director are U.S.-based.
Interested candidates please send a cover letter and resume to contact@theirms.org with the subject line “Contractor Application [Your Name].” We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis, seeking to bring on this support for our operations and programming as soon as possible.
