Legal Services
The Welfare Rights Centre provides free legal information, advice and casework services to people who have a problem with Centrelink. These problems could relate to obtaining or keeping a Centrelink payment or with Centrelink debts, including robodebt. We also advise agencies assisting people who have a problem with Centrelink.
The casework practice comprises a telephone advice service, research, assistance with self-advocacy, interventions directly with Centrelink, written advocacy on behalf of clients and written or personal representation before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.
Advice is given on almost all aspects of social security and family assistance law.
Members of the public can contact us during our advice shift (for more information click here ). One of our volunteers will answer the call and provide information or book an appointment with a solicitor or caseworker. Clients requiring ongoing assistance to resolve their matter will be discussed at a weekly casework meeting and a decision made as to whether the Centre has capacity to take on the client's matter.
In addition to providing advice, the Centre produces factsheets which provide social security information in an easy-to-read format (click here ).
