The Mulder/Pulford Nonet
Formed in 2012, The Mulder/Pulford Nonet is a collaborative project put together by composers Nick Mulder (Melbourne) and Tom Pulford (Adelaide). Blending the compositional scope of a large ensemble with the intimacy of small group jazz, the band’s mission is to showcase exciting original compositions, innovative arrangements and great jazz soloists. The Nonet first performed as a part of JazzSA’s Artists in Residence initiative in 2012, and since that time has toured nationally with musicians from around the country.
The group’s repertoire is influenced heavily by masters Thad Jones and Bill Holman, and is primarily based on the sound and instrumentation of the Joe Lovano Nonet that came to prominence at the turn of the millennium.
Featuring: Will Vinson (alto saxophone), Tom Pulford (tenor saxophone), Vashti Tyrrell (tenor saxophone), Jon Hunt (baritone saxophone), Luke White (trumpet), Nick Mulder (trombone), David McEvoy (piano), Tim Bowen (contrabass), Angus Mason (drums and cymbals)
The Adelaide University Latin Ensemble
The Adelaide University Latin Ensemble performs music from the Afro-Cuban tradition by artists like Tito Puente and Cal Tjader alongside compositions by their director Mark Simeon Ferguson. Formed in 2009, they have played with Elio Villafranca (Cuba/NYC), Ray Vega (NYC), Fabian Hevia (Chile/Sydney) and Lazaro Numa (Cuba)
