Workshops on publishing, funding, and careers
As part of our conference mission to connect and diversify music cognition research we are delighted to offer a strand of Writing Workshop activities funded by The British Academy . Most of these sessions are open to all and can be joined in the same way as any other conference activity. However, a small number of sessions require pre-registration in addition to that of the main conference itself and are restricted to eligible participants (specified using an asterix below). Register before 10 June [now closed].
Academic writing
Academic writing session: open to all.
This session is for ECRs who are starting to write journal articles for academic publication and is an opportunity to learn more about writing style and structuring of academic publications.
Publishing advice
Advice session with book publisher(s): open to all.
In this session you will hear from a publisher about routes to and processes of publishing an academic monograph. The session will also consider open access publishing.
‘Meet-the-editors’ journal publishing advice session: open to all.
This session offers the opportunity to meet editors from some of the fields’ most-read academic journals and learn about the journal publishing process.
Research funding
Webinar(s) provided by a national funding agency: open to all.
In this session you will hear from one or more national funding agencies about their priorities, evaluation criteria and processes to help you develop your research project ideas into fundable applications.
Academic careers
Job application session on processes across different national contexts: open to all.
Visibility and dissemination of research session: open to all.
This session discusses the use of social media platforms and online profiles.
One-to-one sessions - registration is required
*One-to-one mentoring for publication: open to academics from low and middle income economies who want to produce a journal article for publication.
This is a mentoring scheme which starts prior to the conference and pairs each participant with a more experienced academic mentor to help the mentee produce an academic journal article in music cognition for publication. The planned paper could be based on the spoken paper or poster presented at this conference. The mentee and mentor will decide how to work together but we envisage two online meetings/equivalent email exchanges providing guidance and feedback on section drafts.
*Research funding ideas-pitch: open to ECRs only
This session is an opportunity to discuss with peers your ideas for a research project for which you want to apply for external funding. This session is for ECRs who are developing a research funding application and requires preparation of a 5 minute presentation about your idea for synchronous online discussion in a small group of other presenters. The session will be chaired by someone with experience in research funding capture. Note: preference is given for ECRs from low and middle income economies in case of large sign-up.
